When it comes to construction, farming and other related industries, having versatile equipment allows companies to do more with less. Skid steers offer much versatility as they can be used to perform and execute various common tasks. But when buying heavy equipment such as a skid steer, you want to make sure you are getting the most bang for your buck.
At Lyon Auction, we offer in-person and online equipment auctions all over the country. A large majority of the equipment we offer is common machinery used for construction, including skid steers. But before purchasing a skid steer, here are a few things that you should consider.
The size of the skid
The first thing to do when purchasing a skid steer is to consider the size of skid you need. Skid steers come in a variety of sizes, which are all made for different job types and sizes. So, you don’t only need to think about the size of the skid itself, but also the job site, and if there would be enough open room for the skid to operate as it should.
Skid steers become more powerful the bigger they are. So if your job only requires minimal power, a small skid would probably work best. On the flip side, if you are using a skid steer to excavate a large block of land, a larger model would work much better.
Asses the lifts
Skid steers are either a vertical or radial lift machine. This means that each machine has different capabilities and limitations depending on which lift type it has. If you plan on using your skid steer more for digging and close to the groundwork, a radial lift would be more beneficial. On the other hand, vertical lift skids are better when performing work at or above eye level.
Think about attachments
Another thing to consider before purchasing a skid steer is the attachments that you will be using most. Different attachments can increase a skid steers versatility, however, not every attachment will fit every model of skid. Larger skids will often have stronger hydraulic performance, whereas smaller machines will not. Knowing which attachments you will be using the most will help steer you in the right direction, pun intended.
Cab comfort
Lastly, when selecting a skid steer, it’s important to consider the inside of the cab. There are both closed and open skid steers, which offer their own benefits. Closed cabs usually have air conditioning as well as heating, and can be used throughout the entire year. Open cabs on the other hand don’t usually come with such amenities. It’s important to ask yourself whether the operator will be better off in a closed cab or open cab before purchasing the machine.
Skid steers are one of the most common pieces of heavy equipment. With a variety of sizes, lifts and attachment options, it is so important that you consider all elements before making a final decision.
