UPDATED: Construction site safety tips

As we head into the spring months, more and more construction companies in every state will be working on projects throughout the summer and fall. Because of this,  it’s a good time to think about construction site safety!

As a leader in heavy equipment auctions, we want to make sure that every construction company is taking the proper precautions to stay safe while on the job. Here are some construction site safety tips to keep in mind to help prevent injuries and accidents from happening on your job sites!

Choose the proper equipment

It may seem obvious, but it’s so important that you are choosing the right equipment for the job. The wrong equipment can cause damage to the site, the equipment itself, and can be a hazard for employees within the equipment and surrounding it.

Before you start working, always make sure your equipment is working properly and is not damaged. It only takes one missing part to create a terrible accident. Always be sure to thoroughly inspect your tools and heavy equipment before each use to ensure the structure is sound and you are meeting all requirements

Be careful when climbing on and off equipment

Many workers are injured through falls when climbing on and off heavy machinery and large equipment. You can lower the risk of such injuries by following these steps.

  • Check your boots for any slippery materials and wipe them off
  • Use a ladder to make sure you climb on equipment safely
  • Hold on to something before hoisting yourself up

Wear personal protective equipment (PPE)

You need to wear protective gear for your job to prevent any physical injuries. For instance, wear goggles and gloves when using dangerous tools. If you work on an elevated area, be sure to wear a safety harness to minimize the risk of falling and slipping.

Masks are also crucial if you work with dust, debris and dangerous toxins.

Store this gear in a dry place along with other tools used on site. Storing all equipment in one place ensures you don’t trip or fall on dangerous tools lying around the site.

Make communication a focus

Lastly, to ensure that all workers are staying safe on the job site, communication is vital. Accidents are more likely to occur when workers are unsure of what to expect. Direct communication will help all of your workers understand their job duties for the day, and will help prevent surprise accidents from happening. This means site supervisors need to be diligent in  helping their workers and letting them know if they are ever using equipment incorrectly.

As the weather outside becomes warmer and more and more construction projects start to begin, take the time to educate and impose proper safety on construction sites to ensure workers are safe and even equipment stays safe.
