Inspection checklist for heavy equipment

Inspection checklist for heavy equipment

Heavy equipment inspections are not easy. In fact, the process of thoroughly inspecting your equipment takes quite a bit of time and attention to detail. However, equipment inspections are essential in keeping you and your employees safe, as well as keeping your equipment in the best condition possible.

When attending heavy equipment auctions, it’s important that you are inspecting your equipment before purchasing. A proper inspection will ensure that you are getting the most out of your investment!

At Lyon Auction, we provide many heavy equipment auctions across the country. Our mission is to help construction companies and contractors acquire quality used equipment at an affordable cost. Below, we discuss some heavy equipment inspection tips to help ensure your equipment is in the best possible condition!

Inspect the engine

First and foremost, you want to check the engine compartment. This is somewhat similar to a car or vehicle. Doing this will help save you much desired time and money in the long run! If the engine on the piece of equipment doesn’t work or is failing, it could require you to replace it.

When you inspect your equipment’s engine, be sure to check the hoses and make sure they aren’t cracking out.  Next, check the fluid levels – there should be coolant, hydraulic fluid, and oil. If there is not enough of these fluids, it could mean that the equipment was not properly maintained and could end up costing you a lot on repairs or even a replacement.

You also want to check the radiator, all the seals, gaskets, and air filters. Sound familiar? It should, as these are all components of a vehicle!

Other inspection tips

If the heavy equipment you’re looking to purchase has blades or buckets, you will want to inspect them as well. Look for extra worn or broken teeth, as well as the bucket. If you notice any damages, you may need to start thinking about possible repair or purchasing new attachments.

Tires are another very expensive component if you have to replace them. You want to make sure they are in good condition. Using equipment too much or not enough can have significant effects on your tire’s condition. Be sure that the tires are able to hold air, and have good enough tread!

Finally, check the rubber tracks and make sure they are holding tension, this indicates it’s up to date on inspections.

Whether you are purchasing new equipment or just want to make the most out of your investment, inspections are essential. Equipment inspections will help you lower the risk of workplace injuries, increase productivity, lower repair costs, and keep your equipment in the best condition possible! Use these tips when inspecting your equipment this fall!
